Meet A Parkie

Jeffrey Vayda

Foreman at Jones Beach West End

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

This is my fourth year as a Foreman at Jones Beach, West End. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is the variety; no two days are exactly alike. Jones Beach is a dynamic, delicate ecosystem, and a big part of my job is finding the balance between human recreation and environmental preservation. On any given day, you might find me landscaping, planting vibrant flowers, protecting local wildlife habitats, or ensuring our facilities are safe, clean, and welcoming for the thousands of visitors who flock here.

My work extends beyond Jones Beach. I've lent a hand at the Summer Fun Runs, helped with the Haunted House at Connetquot River State Park, prepped the Jack-O’-Lantern Float, and built the magic for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Belmont Lake State Park.

Prior to your time at Parks, what was your experience?

I owned and managed a staffing agency based in Manhattan. We specialized in placing talent within healthcare and nonprofit organizations. It was a fulfilling career because it was about changing lives. I loved helping people find meaningful employment that allowed them to support themselves, advance their careers, and provide for their families.

The past six years, I’ve served as a high school wrestling referee. Trading a business suit for a referee whistle might seem like a leap, but it’s been a fantastic, high-energy way to stay active, mentor student-athletes, and remain deeply connected to the Long Island community.

How has it been working for New York State Parks?

If there are any downs, I haven’t found them yet. Each quarter brings an entirely new set of responsibilities and environmental challenges, which keeps me on my toes. Whether we are bracing for winter or prepping for the peak summer rush, every single task is driven by a singular goal: creating a seamless, beautiful experience for visitors while preserving these natural treasures for future generations.

If I had to pick a favorite perk of the job, it’s the 'office view.' Whether I’m there at dawn opening the beach gates or locking up at dusk, I am treated to unobstructed sunrises and sunsets. That view never gets old, and it reminds me how lucky I am to be here.

What are some fun facts about you?

Jones Beach, especially the West End, holds a piece of my heart. As a teenager, I spent summers walking out to the jetty and boogie boarding for hours. Fast forward to the winter of 1999, that walk out to Sunset Beach is where I proposed to my wife. To now walk these same shores as a Foreman, taking care of the place that shaped my youth and my family, feels like a beautiful, full-circle moment.
