Eye of the Beholder
Photo Contest 2024
Through the medium of photography, the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center wishes to create community engagement and inspire environmental advocacy. It is the hope of the Center that this contest will introduce the Center as a hub for environmental art.
Contest Information
Participants can submit only one photo per each month’s theme.
Participants must be at least 12 years of age.
Photos must be taken at Jones Beach State Park.
Photos must have been taken on or after January 1st, 2022, unless the monthly theme states otherwise.
Each month will have a different theme, information for which will become available at the start of the month.
Two winners will be chosen each month; one winner will be chosen by the staff of the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center and one winner will be selected by the public via social media.
Photos must be at least 300 pixels per inch.
By submitting photos, you are allowing the Center to post photos on the organization’s social media.
By submitting photos, you are allowing the Center to print the photos for the purpose of an in person exhibition.
Contestants can submit black and white, color photos, and scanned film photos- whatever you have, we would love to see!
Please note: Photo winners and participants may be featured in a public exhibit at the Center which will open in mid- July.

From the art deco architecture to the bay side marshes to the coastal dunes, Jones Beach State Park is a landscape worth photographing. For our first month’s theme, we invite participants to submit photos which celebrate the scenery of the state park.

The tiniest of insects and the most vibrant of plants can be a thing of beauty. At Jones Beach State Park, there are a number of species of insects and plants which play an integral role in the beach ecosystem. For our March theme, we invite participants to submit photos of the tiny details and the hidden worlds of plants and insects that are often overlooked at the beach.
Need inspiration? For this theme, please feel free to submit photos which may include the following:
Macro photography (extreme close-up photos) of plants and insects
Plant details i.e. tree bark, flower petals, leaves
Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center Pollinator Garden
Submissions for this theme will be accepted March 1 to March 24.

Shoot for the stars! Even the sunsets at Jones Beach seem to shine as bright as the stars- we’re aiming to celebrate this idea in April. For April, we invite participants to submit their best sunset photos, their favorite solar photos, and any astronomy photos they may have taken while visiting Jones Beach.

Weather events, such as hurricanes and snowstorms, can create the most breathtaking views down at the shore. Though these events may cause flooding and damage, we are ultimately still left with a beach to enjoy alongside wildlife. For May, we invite participants to submit photos of weather events and views of the shoreline.
*Reminder- please use your best judgement when taking storm photos. Do not put yourself at risk for a photo!
